Global National producing national Mandarin-language newscast

Canada’s newest national newscast launched January 23 – and this was no ordinary Canadian newscast.

It’s in Mandarin.

Global National Mandarin debuted on Chinese New Year with broadcast veteran Carol Wang at the helm.

In Vancouver, the 30-minute newscast airs weeknights at 7:00 and 11:30 PT on Shaw Multicultural Channel 116. In Calgary, it airs weeknights at 10:00 MT on Shaw Multicultural Channel 89.

Frank Qi, an established and well-regarded journalist within the Chinese community, is Global National Mandarin‘s correspondent.

“With Carol and Frank, Global National Mandarin has secured two experienced and well-respected journalists who are very familiar with the Chinese community to help launch this innovative newscast,” says Troy Reeb, the vice-president of Global News.

“Their keen news sense paired with the resources provided by Global National’s production team will allow Global National Mandarin to put together the most up-to-date Mandarin-language newscast possible.”

With more than 12 years of television anchoring and reporting experience in both Canada and China, Wang has cemented herself as a pillar within British Columbia’s Chinese-speaking community. She previously worked at Fairchild Media’s Talentvision before moving over to OMNI News: Mandarin Edition.

Qi has more than a decade of experience working with Vancouver-based Chinese media. He was a reporter and anchor at Fairchild, before becoming the station’s assignment editor in 2007.

“The partnership between Global News and Shaw Multicultural Channel represents our combined desire to bring our Mandarin-speaking viewers the timely and informative news they want and deserve,” adds Reeb.

Global National Mandarin‘s production team will seek out exclusive commentary from prominent sources in the Mandarin-speaking community to offer their expertise on the key stories of the day.
