WATCH ABOVE: NTSB investigating after plane skids of runway at LaGuardia
A Delta Airlines flight from Atlanta skidded off the runway at New York City’s LaGuardia airport on Thursday, coming to rest only after it had crashed through a chain-link fence.
Commercial air travel accidents are rare. But here are some previous close calls and crash landings:
February 24, 2015 – A Jazz Aviation aircraft coming from Toronto hits an approach light when it comes short of a Sault Ste. Marie Airport runway. The crew’s visibility was completely blocked by a sudden snow squall.
December, 2014 – A small aircraft on a slick runway in Belize slips beyond the runway and winds up floating in the sea.
October, 2014 – An Air Labrador plane on a very short runway in Quebec’s the La Tabatière Airport turns so sharply its tires come off.
November, 2014 – An Air Canada flight makes an emergency landing in Edmonton after experiencing a mechanical issue. It veers off the runway, injuring four people.
April, 2014 – A Lion Air jet misses the runway of an airport in the island of Bali, Indonesia, crashing into the sea without causing any deaths.
June 2014 – A small aircraft occupied by soccer fans going to a mass for a former player skids off the runway and crashes into a fence at Brazil’s Aruaña Airport.
November, 2013 – Tatarstan Airlines Flight 363 crashes while attempting to land in Kazan, Russia. It killed the more than 50 people on board.
July, 2013 – Asiana Airlines 214 crashes at the San Francisco International Airport killing two people and leaving several injured.
June 2013 – A domestic passenger aircraft collides with an impala during landing at Tanzania’s Seronera Airport.
February, 2013 – A Ukrainian South Airlines plane crashes while trying to land under poor visibility at Donetsk Airport. Five passengers are killed and eight injured.
December, 2009 – An American Airlines jet coming from Miami overshoots the runway of an airport in Kingston, Jamaica. 91 people are injured.
July, 2007 – TAM Airlines flight 3054 crashes trying to land at the Cogonhas Airport in Sao Paolo, Brazil. Almost 200 people die, including a dozen people that where on the ground.
July 2006 – A Russian airbus skids off the runway during landing in Irkutsk, Siberia. More than a hundred people die.
