WATCH: Baby orca spotted with endangered southern resident pod

VANCOUVER – A newborn orca has been spotted off the west coast.

The Centre for Whale Research posted a notice saying the new calf was spotted off the Washington Coast with L-Pod. This is one of the three families of southern resident orcas in the area.

The whale known as ‘L94’ appears to be the mother of the new baby and staff at the centre say the calf looks very energetic.

Video was taken of the calf on Thursday by researchers from the NOAA research ship.

This is the third baby born to resident pods in recent months, but the population is only at 80, which is still dangerously low.
