Vandals slash tires in south Vancouver neighbourhood

WATCH: A rash of tire slashings at a South Vancouver subsidized housing complex is much more than an inconvenience for some residents. Jennifer Palma reports.

Residents of a south Vancouver neighbourhood say they’re fed up after vandals repeatedly damaged parked cars in the area.

Over the weekend more than a dozen cars parked outside the Tivoli Gardens complex had their tires slashed.

Car owners have contacted police, who have opened a file, but so far suspect descriptions have been released. The property management company, Metro Vancouver Housing Corporation, did not respond to an interview request from Global BC.

Some in the neighbourhood are thinking about forming a night patrol or perhaps making a more permanent change.

“At this point, I’m just hoping that this is not going to happen again,” says Patricia Serrano. “Otherwise, I have to think about moving from here.”

This is the second time the complex has been targeted. Resident Melanie Nand, who suffers from a disability, needs her car to get around says this is the second time she has had her tires slashed in the last few months.

“It kind of sucks to take transit when you’re disabled…just waiting around for buses is not ideal,” she says.

“When you walk outside and look at your tires and realize something is wrong and you don’t have $300 to fix it, it kind of ruins your whole day.”
