Health officials fielding calls about measles vaccine from concerned parents, travellers

VANCOUVER – There are now almost twenty confirmed cases of measles in Canada and hundreds more people who have fallen sick in the U.S.

The disease is highly infectious and fears that it will continue to spread is prompting a sudden surge in demand for the vaccine.

Fraser Health and Vancouver Coastal Health are receiving more calls from people, hoping to travel soon, who say they are unsure if their child needs a booster vaccine or if they need to expedite the second dose of the vaccine.

The Canadian Centre for Disease Control says children who have had the first MMR vaccine around age 2 can wait until they are between four and six years old before they get the second dose, as they will be protected.

Parents who are unsure if they are protected as they can’t remember if they had the MMR vaccine, can get a booster shot.
