VANCOUVER – The Raven’s Cry Theatre, Sechelt’s only movie theatre, has banned Fifty Shades of Grey from their establishment.
The highly anticipated film has an 18A rating, but the owner of the theatre is concerned that the movie will be too impressionable on young girls who will be able to see it with older friends or relatives.
It is unclear if the Gibsons Cinema will be showing the film as it is not in the coming attractions.
The movie has sparked a lot of debate about its material, based on a book about a sadomasochistic relationship between a virgin and an entrepreneur.
The film has already been banned in Kenya and Malaysia for being “too sadistic.”
However, in France it has been given a 12 rating as it was decided the story won’t shock a lot of people. It has been given an R rating in the U.S. (meaning anyone 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult), and it was given a 18 rating in the U.K. The movie is set to be screened in the United Arab Emirates to determine if it will be banned in that nation or not.
We want to hear from you. Should the movie be banned by theatres or countries or should people be left to make up their own mind?
