Video: Vancouver hockey wedding video skates to online stardom

VANCOUVER – It’s the little hockey wedding video that could – and did.

When hockey fanatics Brit Wong and Drew Burant decided to tie the knot, they also decided a hockey rink would be the place to say their vows.

Despite rooting for different teams – Vancouver-born Wong cheers for the Vancouver Canucks, Regina-bred Burant is a diehard Edmonton Oilers fan – the hockey-playing pair chose Killarney Ice Rink for their big day.

To record the couple skating towards holy matrimony, they chose hockey-playing videographer Andrew Noon of Clear Horizons Productions to record the festivities.

To date, the video has over 162,000 views.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“I’m a figure skater turned hockey player, I’ve taught skating for 13 years,” said Wong, 29, a Vancouver city employee. “Drew grew up in Regina, where you’re born on skates.

“I’m always at his games, he’s always at my games.”

In the videotaped vows, Wong promises to marry Burant, a 29-year-old Air Canada employee, “even though you’re an Oilers fan.”

The viral video even features Burant, who players goalie and forward, in the penalty box, taking off the dreaded Oilers jersey – though at home he’s still wearing Oilers colours penalty-free.

“I let him wear his Oilers jersey, but only on game days,” laughs Wong, who plays defence and forward. “That’s so I can wear my Canucks jersey on game days.

“During the playoff run, he saw a lot of my Canucks jersey.

Last season the Canucks ruled and the Oilers finished dead last. But it’s a new season, and Wong’s a little nervous hubby will be wearing Oilers colours well into the playoffs.

“I’m not going to lie – they’re an exciting team this year.”
