TORONTO – The Toronto Police Service Board is meeting today to elect a chair and vice-chair.

Part of the agenda for Mayor John Tory and other members of the seven-member committee will be deciding the fate of chair Alok Mukherjee.

The Toronto Star is reporting he will be reappointed for one more year. It quotes sources that say Mayor John Tory wants Mukherjee to stay in his role, as they go through a “transitional phase.”

Mukherjee, who has been sitting on the board for more than 10 years, came under fire after he shared two controversial postings on his Facebook page.

The first was a meme comparing the number of Americans killed by ISIS, Ebola and police officers with the caption: “Just a reminder of who the enemy is in this world.”

He also shared a post that read, “Marriage is like a deck of cards. In the beginning, all you need is two hearts and a diamond. By the end, you wish you had a club and a spade.”

The Toronto Police Association had asked for his resignation, but the board decided not to discipline him. He has since deactivated his account.

The board will also present outgoing police Chief Bill Blair with a medal of merit.

He is expected to present a report on “Search of Persons” and recommend an end to carding.

This year, the board is also tasked with choosing a new police chief to replace Blair, and negotiating contract agreements with the Toronto Police Association.
