WINNIPEG – Manitoba NDP leadership candidate Theresa Oswald wants to create a pension plan for Manitobans who do not already have a pension through their work.
Oswald is one of three candidates in the running to lead the province’s NDP party.
On Sunday she said if elected premier, she would look at a system like the one being introduced in Ontario, where workers and employers would pay up to $1,600 annually per person.
“We know that after years of working hard, everyone wants to have a secure retirement,” said Oswald. “Less than half of Manitobans have access to a pension plan through their work.”
She also said Manitobans would constantly be consulted about the plan’s details and work on implementing a phase-in plan strategy.
The exact amount to be paid and the levels of benefits would be worked out after talking to business and labour groups, she said.
Oswald was part of a caucus revolt that has forced Premier Greg Selinger into a leadership contest at the NDP’s annual convention March 8.
