TORONTO – A Massachusetts woman who thought she had simply put on extra weight over the holiday season gave birth to a ten-pound baby nearly an hour after discovering she was pregnant.
While hard to believe, that’s exactly what Katie Kropas is claiming after welcoming her newborn to the world at South Shore Hospital on Tuesday.
Kropas originally arrived at the hospital suffering from severe cramping and back pain. When hospital staff confirmed she was at full-term and in labour, she and her boyfriend were certainly shocked.
“I thought I had put on some Christmas season weight, but I never thought I was pregnant. Never,” she told CBS affiliate WBZ.

Less than an hour later, Kropas delivered her daughter.
“They told me that I had a full term baby, ready to come, now. So I found out at 10:15 and I had her at 11:06,” she added.

Kropas claims that she didn’t experience any morning sickness leading up to the birth. In fact, according to a report from NECN, the only symptom she experienced that could be attributed to pregnancy was swollen feet, which she chalked up to working too much.
Kropas claims she had been taking birth control and still had a virtually regular menstrual cycle.
Even her mother – who she lives with – was caught off guard.
“I’ve heard these stories over and over. You hear them and think, ‘Oh my God, how did somebody not know,’ and this and that, but I can tell you, this is real and true and it happens,” Karen Kropas, a brand new grandmother, told NECN.
As it turns out, unexpected deliveries aren’t completely unheard of.
“We do about 3,500 births a year, and we probably see this a few times a year,” Dr. Kim Dever, chair of the Obstetrics and Gynecology at South Shore Hospital, told CBS Boston. “Very often, especially in your first pregnancy, you’re really not aware of what you’re feeling and we often have women joke and say they’re feeling gas pains or they can attribute it to other natural conditions.”
As for the Kropas family, they have some shopping to do.
