WATCH: Summerland woman earns opportunity to race in Daytona

SUMMERLAND — It’s a dream come true for a Summerland woman. Sarah Cornett-Ching, 23, will soon be racing on an elite circuit during Speedweeks in Daytona.  She earned a spot to compete in Daytona 200, a grueling race lasting two hours,  where she’ll have to do 80 laps around the track. Cornett-Ching visited the speedway with her family when she was eight years old. Now she will be returning to the track, but this time, she will be behind the wheel.

“I can’t even put into words how excited I am. This is an opportunity of a lifetime. I’m just going to go down there and try to capitalize on it,” says Cornett-Ching.

She may be young compared to her competitors, but she already has a decade of experience.

When she was 12 years-old, she was hit with the racing bug, thanks to a gift from her dad, who’s a mechanic and race car driver himself.

“We showed up at the shop one day and there was a race car sitting with my name on it. Mom didn’t like it too much, but it was pretty exciting for me.”

Cornett-Ching says the biggest roadblock in fulfilling all her racing dreams is the lack of funding for rookies.

She’s set up a crowdfunding website to help fuel her passion.
