WATCH: Residents raise the alarm over youth recovery house opening in East Vancouver neighbourhood

Renfrew Heights residents says they are outraged about a plan to put a recovery house in their quiet neighbourhood.

In a heated meeting last night, dozens of residents voiced their concerns, saying there was no public consultation.

Located across the street from a preschool and an elementary school, the house was purchased by the provincial government for 1.64 million dollars this spring.

Now newly renovated, renfrew house will be home to six at risk youth aged 16-24, all suffering from mental health and addiction issues. Neighbours were told residents will have no history of arson or sexual violence involving children.

Later the operator of Renfrew House admitted this is a promise they really can’t keep as they have no access to any young offender records.

The operators said there would be a curfew although they couldn’t provide any details.

Neighbours have been told that despite their concerns, the recovery house will open, and if they do have any problems, they’re being advised to phone and complain.
