John Tory names former deputy mayor as chair of transition team

TORONTO – John Tory hasn’t been sworn in yet but is getting started with the process of transitioning city hall from Rob Ford’s to his own administration.

And right now, he’s concerned about getting the keys to city hall and an office inside.

He’s named Case Ootes, a former councillor and deputy mayor under Mel Lastman has the chair of his transition team.

Tory hinted he wanted to create a bi-partisan team and says he wants help from Doug Ford, David Soknacki, Karen Stintz and Olivia Chow.

He did not however say whether Mayor Rob Ford would be part of his executive or chair any committees after he transitions back to being the councillor for Ward 2.

But tensions could be high between the two as Ford kicked off his own re-election campaign for 2018 on Monday night.

“I plan to treat him with just as much respect as I would any other member of council,” Tory said.

Tory hasn’t named any committee chairs or his deputy mayor yet but did say “that will unfold in the days ahead.”

Tory won the mayoral election Monday night with over 40 per cent of the vote and nearly 395,000 votes. Doug Ford finished second with 33 per cent of the vote and over 330,000 votes.
