City of Richmond considering whether to move ahead with bylaw requiring English signs

WATCH: Will Richmond go ahead with a controversial sign bylaw? Tanya Beja reports.

The City of Richmond could go ahead with a bylaw that would require English on signs, but only if they’re able to show a compelling need—otherwise it could be struck down by the courts as prohibiting freedom of expression.

That was the conclusion of lawyer Sandra Carter, who wrote a report to city council after they requested a legal opinion on the controversial topic.

The issue was discussed at council last year after a petition was brought forward, but was not acted upon.

For their part, the Richmond Chamber of Commerce says city hall shouldn’t interfere.

“It’s ultimately the decision of each individual business owner, we don’t feel we should be mandating things to our members,” says Rob Akimow.

Whether the city will go forward with a bylaw will be seen in the coming weeks.
