EDMONTON — A patient with what was feared to be a “potential contagious illness” at an Edmonton hospital is no longer in isolation, Alberta Health officials say.

Kerry Williamson, a spokesperson with AHS, said the patient was brought to hospital Saturday morning and did not spend any time in an Emergency Department waiting room. He said the patient was immediately triaged and placed in isolation as a precaution to  reduce risks to other patients, staff and the public.

On Monday, AHS confirmed the “specific Infection Prevention and Control protocols” that were put into place are no longer required.

“Enacting these protocols was not something done lightly, and we are confident the protocols worked well to minimize any risk to staff and physicians. There was no risk to the public whatsoever,” according to AHS.

AHS has not said at which hospital the patient is being treated. However, the  precautionary Infection Prevention and Control protocols were enacted at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, within EMS, and at the University of Alberta Hospital.

To protect patient confidentiality, AHS said it will not be providing further details regarding this case.
