TORONTO — Nico & Vinz got something right this year when they re-released “Am I Wrong,” a song they had debuted nine months earlier under the name Envy.
The success of the single thrust Nicolas Sereba and Vincent Dery into the global spotlight after about four years of modest success in their native Norway.
The video for the song has been viewed more than 87 million times.
For their first album as Nico & Vinz, the pair blended personal influences — including reggae, West African dance, hip hop and soul — to create a collection of songs with positive messages.
“We are Norwegian and African,” explained Vinz, in a release. “It is important for us to inspire. We sing about things we’ve been going through and about finding ourselves. To us it’s important to have a message, and the goal for us is to inspire people to find happiness.”

The album, Black Star Elephant, is set for release on Oct. 14 — but it can be streamed here a week in advance.
“We set such high goals because we have to,” said Nico. “Especially coming from Norway, a country of 5 million people, it’s very unusual for people to say I want to be big, as big as Michael Jackson even. We are kind of rebellious in that way of thinking.
“We want to show people that you can become whatever you want if you believe and work hard.”
