‘Guess we don’t have to worry about bills too much anymore’: Alberta couple on $18M lotto win

EDMONTON – The road less travelled really made all the difference for an Alberta couple who just hit the jackpot.

Brad Kelly was travelling between Lethbridge and his home in Lacombe County when he decided to take a different route, making a little pit stop at the 7/Eleven in Claresholm.

“I just had a craving for a cherry Dr. Pepper,” he said.

He also picked up his usual 6/49 $19 quick pick ticket for the June 25 draw. It wasn’t until about a week later that he realized how lucky he was.

“First ticket I checked in the self-check and almost fell on my butt right there. I couldn’t really believe it. I was just kinda like, ‘oh my god,’ cause there’s all these numbers. So I gave it to the clerk and said, ‘I think there’s something wrong with the machine.’

“Wasn’t sure I was going to make it out of there alive. I thought I was going to have a heart attack.”

When he called his wife Amanda, a vet technician, she was equally as stunned by the news.

“I told her, yeah, we won the lottery and she’s like (sigh), ‘that’s nice but I really have work to do.'”

The two, who’ve been married for five years, plans to use the money to pay off debt. The couple would also like to take a much-overdue honeymoon. As for the rest of the money, they plan on figuring that out as they go.

“We were pretty blessed before with what we built with hard work,” said Brad, who works as a directional driller. “But I guess now we can just enjoy it a little bit more.”
