MILLVILLE, N.B. – A fire has destroyed the fire hall and the town council of a small community in northwestern New Brunswick.
Chief Justin McGuigan said they got the call around 3:30 a.m., but the building was “too far gone” by the time firefighters had reached the building. He said it was “heartbreaking to stand and watch their hall burn.”
“It’s like watching your own home burn and you can’t go inside and get your family photo album out,” McGuigan said.
“It is really difficult to watch a facility like this go up, because you put so much time into this building, trying to make it what it is. And then when it is threatened by fire, and all of your tools to help fight that fire are inside, it’s a really helpless feeling.”
The fire department lost everything in the blaze except a truck, which they had donated to the Nackawic fire department last week after that community’s fire station also went up in flames last week.
“It’s just scary because a week ago it happened in Nackawic. What’s next? It could be a house, could be some elderly people. It’s just scary,” said nearby resident Garth Morehouse.
The Millville fire department has 18 volunteer crew members.
The village is located about 60 kilometers northwest of Fredericton, near the Crabbe Mountain ski area.
Firefighters say the cause of the fire is not yet known.
