Ram Sharan Sharma, famed historian of ancient and medieval India, dies at 92

PATNA, India – Indian historian Ram Sharan Sharma has died in a hospital in the eastern state of Bihar after a prolonged illness. He was 92.

Sharma was known as an expert on medieval and ancient Indian history and authored 115 books during a career that kept him at the forefront of historical research in India. He led the 1970s expansion of Delhi University’s history department and later founded the Indian Council of Historical Research.

Sharma also taught at the University of Toronto and the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.

His family says he died over the weekend in a private hospital while being treated for various illnesses.

Bihar held a state funeral late Sunday for Sharma.
