EDMONTON – Edmonton police believe two vehicles were street racing when they collided on Wayne Gretzky Drive early Saturday morning.
Officers were called to the collision around 6:10 a.m. after reports that a white Subaru had rolled on Wayne Gretzky Drive near 101 Ave.
A second vehicle, a Nissan, left the roadway down an embankment, police said.
Police believe the vehicles were racing when they crashed.
“Speeds, although they haven’t been confirmed yet, witnesses say speeds of upwards of 130, 140 kilometres an hour,” said Edmonton Police Service spokesperson Scott Pattison.
One male driver was treated by EMS and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The other driver was not injured, according to police.
The EPS says it continues to see motorists driving at excessive speed and warns it will not be tolerated.
“Road racing can cause not only harm to those who are participating, but to innocent people who are driving within the same traffic areas,” said Pattison.
“Chief Knecht has come out a number of times cautioning people and warning those who would participate in such behaviour that they will be caught and they will be prosecuted to the most degree of the law.”

The southbound lanes of Wayne Gretzky Drive were closed between 101 and 106 Avenues Saturday morning while police conducted their investigation. The roadway was reopened around noon.
