EDMONTON – A Calgary man is in hospital with unknown injuries after a collision north of Edmonton Friday evening.
RCMP were called around 5:15 p.m. to the intersection of Cardiff Road and Highway 2 near Morinville after a two-vehicle collision involving a motorcycle.
Witnesses tell police a motorcycle was heading north on Highway 2 when it turned left at Cardiff Road, hitting a Ford F-150 pickup truck that was heading south on Highway 2.
The driver of the motorcycle, a 54-year-old Calgary man, was taken to hospital by STARS Air Ambulance.
“We don’t know the extent of his injuries at this time,” said Sergeant Mark Mathias with Morinville RCMP.

Residents have long had concerns about the intersection, which many describe as dangerous and unsafe.
The province has committed $1 million to making improvements to the intersection. Construction to implement traffic lights, guard rails and street lights is expected to be complete by September.
“I don’t know if lights will make that intersection any safer or not,” said Mathias. “The new traffic control that’s being put in is designed by the province and they implement that. We simple enforce any traffic issues that come about after.”

In the summer of 2011, the province announced a $38 million interchange to improve the intersection, but following last March’s provincial budget, the Highway 2 overpass project was put on hold.
The cause of Friday’s collision is still under investigation, but Mathias says there are no indications that speed or alcohol were factors.
