Montreal radio sports talk fixture Ted Tevan dies at 78

MONTREAL – Ted Tevan, a fixture on Montreal talk radio for decades, has died in hospital at the age of 78.

Reports say he died Friday at St. Mary’s hospital in Montreal of a heart attack following hip surgery.

Tevan was known for his distinctive raspy voice and emotional broadcasting style while hosting late-night shows.

Tevan moved to Montreal from Kingston, Ont., in 1965 to take a job selling radio advertisements and by the 1970s, he began hosting his first regular open-line sports program, Sports Rap, on CFOX.

His style was sometimes confrontational and he would kick some callers off the air by growling, “You’re gone!” with a machine-gun sound effect.

Tevan also worked at such radio stations as CKO, CFMB, CIQC and CKGM and in recent years, hosted a weekly program on the sports station THE TEAM 990. (CJAD)
