EDMONTON – One person is dead after a two-vehicle collision south of Stony Plain Wednesday evening.
Spruce Grove/Stony Plain RCMP were called to the collision at the intersection of Secondary Highways 779 and 627, around 5:40 p.m.
Officers say a Toyota Corolla was heading south on Highway 779 when it failed to stop at a stop sign, colliding with a Chevrolet Equinox that was heading west on Highway 627.
Both drivers, and lone occupants of the vehicles, were taken by ambulance to the Stony Plain Hospital.
The driver of the Corolla was pronounced dead at the hospital, RCMP said.
The driver of the SUV suffered serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
The past couple weeks have been deadly on Alberta roads. As of Wednesday morning, 21 fatalities had been recorded in the province since June 25. This latest fatal collision brings that number to 22.

The names of the drivers have not been released.
The cause of the collision is still under investigation. Officers say it’s not known if alcohol was a factor in the collision.
