EDMONTON – Drivers who rely on Groat Road can breathe a sigh of relief. After two days of traffic headaches, the busy road re-opened around 6 a.m. on Wednesday.
Motorists were forced to deal with a frustrating delay on Monday and Tuesday due to an unexpected road closure. It was due to the demolition of the 102 Avenue Bridge over Groat Road not going exactly as planned.

The second oldest bridge in Edmonton was torn down Sunday after closing on Canada Day. Now, a 15-month project begins to replace the old infrastructure.

The city says the new $132 million structure will be better equipped to handle not just cars, but bikes and pedestrians as well.
The bridge, which sees about 20,000 vehicles pass over it daily, is expected to reopen in the fall of 2015.
