Manitoba musicians set to play Canada’s largest music festival

WINNIPEG — Manitoba is getting ready to send one of its biggest contingents of musicians to take part in Canada’s largest music festival.

NXNE (North by Northeast) in Toronto is in its 25th year and has grown from a small three-day event to a massive 10-day festival that now also includes film, comedy and art.

In 2013, more than 350,000 people took in the sights and sounds of musicians from around the globe.

From June 13 to 22, more than 800 musical acts, including at least a dozen from Manitoba, will showcase their talents for industry agents.

Most of the acts are independent and unsigned and looking to advance their careers.

Manitoba Music has been at NXNE in some capacity every year since the late 1990s. The group helps to support artists’ travel through their market access funding program.

“It’s important to support our local talent, to hold showcases and bring these acts in front of music insiders,” said Sara Stasiuk, executive director of Manitoba Music.

Some of the Manitoba acts that will be at the festival this year are Indicator Indicator, Jess Reimer, SC Mira, Federal Lights and Yes We Mystic!
