Speed and booze believed to factors in Edmonton fatal: police

EDMONTON – One person is dead, and a woman is in hospital after a collision in north east Edmonton.

Police say a Pontiac Sunfire was speeding south on Fort Road at around 17 St. when it lost control, drove off the road, and rolled several times before coming to a stop in a ditch.

The 40-year-old male driver died at the scene.

A 53-year-old female passenger was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police continue to investigate the crash but believe speed and alcohol were factors.

The collision happened at around 9:30 Sunday night.

This is Edmonton’s 11th traffic fatality of the year.

There were 13 traffic fatalities at the same time in 2013.
