EDMONTON – Astronaut and beloved Canadian Chris Hadfield was in attendance Saturday night as Fort McMurray celebrated the opening of its new airport terminal.
As one of the fastest growing airports in Canada, the Fort McMurray International Airport saw nearly 1.2 million passengers pass through its door in 2013.
The new $258-million facility will be able to accommodate more flights and features 16 retail and food & beverage outlets.
While the airport doesn’t officially open until June 9, an air show and gala were held in Fort McMurray Saturday to celebrate its opening.
Spectators were treated to demonstrations from the Canadian Forces Skyhawk, a CF-18, and the Snowbirds.
