TORONTO – The Internet was filled with praise Friday after it was revealed Steve Ballmer had agreed to buy the Los Angeles Clippers for a record breaking US$2 billion.

Shelly Sterling said in a statement issued late Thursday that she’d signed a binding contract for a sale of the Clippers by The Sterling Family Trust to Ballmer in what would be a record deal if approved by the NBA.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Basketball legend Magic Johnson took to Twitter Thursday night to express his joy over the news tweeting, “Clipper Fans you’ll love Steve Ballmer as your owner.”

But elsewhere on Twitter a very nerdy joke was evolving.

You see, Ballmer is the former CEO of Microsoft and Microsoft is responsible for creating “Clippy” the Microsoft Office assistant.  The Internet, being what it is, quickly put two and two together and reacted to the irony.

Even brands like SiriusXM got in on the joke.

Ironically, a parody account for Clippy has not yet tweeted about the Clippers purchase.
