Fire at Regina’s Global Transportation Hub prompts recycling warning

A fire at the Global Transportation hub Friday afternoon caused a full evacuation.

It happened just before 2 p.m. in a section of the building where the city’s curbside recycling is taken.

Fire crews arrived to find smoke billowing out of the building. A sprinkler system kept the flames at bay until crews showed up and quickly extinguished it.

The initial investigation shows the blaze started in a measuring bin, a piece of equipment that takes raw recycled materials out of the trucks.

While fire investigators are still determining the exact cause of this fire, the Fire Marshall said he was “shocked” and “appalled” at the amount of hazardous materials going into blue bins.

He saw things like propane tanks, and aerosol cans that can easily start fires and cause serious injury or death to plant workers should they be overlooked and dumped into this container.

He’s asking people to educate themselves on what can safely go in the blue bin.
