TORONTO — Was actor Zac Efron up to no good when police found him in a seedy part of downtown Los Angeles this week?

The 26-year-old star, who reportedly completed a drug treatment program last year, was punched in the face in a brawl with two men shortly after 12:30 a.m. in an area of the city known for late-night drug and gang activity.

Police chalked the fight up to “mutual combat” and declined to make any arrests.

TMZ reported Efron and a man he identified as his bodyguard told officers they had run out of gas and were waiting for a tow truck when two transients confronted them and a fight broke out.

The website reported the man with Efron is not his bodyguard but, in fact, a friend of Efron who has a criminal record for drugs and violence.

“While fans are very concerned about his well-being, they’re also wondering what he was doing in such a dangerous area so late at night,” reads a story at Canadian blogger Bonnie Fuller’s Hollywood Life.

This is not the first time Efron has suffered an injury under mysterious circumstances.

Last November, he claimed he slipped in a puddle of water at his home and broke his jaw.

Efron has struggled for a box office hit since starring in the High School Musical movies. His credits include The Paperboy, That Awkward Moment and the made-in-Toronto film Hairspray.

His next film is the comedy Neighbors co-starring Canada’s Seth Rogen.

Neither Efron or his reps have publicly commented on the incident.
