Atlanta Thrashers owners negotiating sale of team to Winnipeg-based company

The owners of the Atlanta Thrashers have reportedly begun negotiations on a sale that would relocate the team to Winnipeg.

Atlanta Spirit is in talks with Winnipeg-based True North Sports and Entertainment, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

A spokesman for True North declined comment. NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly, via e-mail, told the newspaper there was "nothing I’m prepared to say at this point."

True North, which is led by businessman Mark Chipman and billionaire David Thomson, owns Winnipeg’s MTS Centre and the AHL’s Manitoba Moose.

Winnipeg has been without an NHL team since the Jets were moved to Phoenix in 1996.
