Vancouver stays undefeated, books semifinals berth with 4-2 win over Quebec

<p>ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – Sam Reinhart scored the go-ahead goal in the third period and Mitch Fytte added some insurance as the Vancouver North West Giants topped the Lions du Lac St-Louis 4-2 on Thursday at the Telus Cup men’s national midget championship.</p> <p>With the win, Vancouver (4-0) remains the lone undefeated team, and wraps up first place and a spot in Saturday’s semifinals.</p> <p>Alex Kerfoot opened the scoring with his tournament-leading seventh goal on a Vancouver man advantage just 7:24 in.</p> <p>It took until the 6:47 mark of the second period for Quebec’s Lac St-Louis (2-2) to respond, courtesy of a Michael Matheson power-play goal.</p> <p>But Vancouver struck back just 1:32 later when Jackson Houck scored yet another Giants goal while playing a man up.</p> <p>Patrick Walsh recorded the game’s first goal at even strength early in the third period to again pull Lac St-Louis even, but Reinhart made the Lions pay for too many trips to the penalty box, taking a pass from Mitchell Steinke and roofing a backhand over Patrick DesRochers.</p> <p>Fytte rounded out the scoring with a quick goal after Reinhart’s go-ahead marker and Giants goaltender Daniel Cotton did the rest, making 10 of his 32 saves in the third period.</p> <p>Titans 2, Jr. Knights 2</p> <p>At St. John’s, N.L., Patrick MacIsaac scored his second goal of the third period with just 1:34 remaining to help the Halifax Titans earn a 2-2 tie with the London Jr. Knights.</p> <p>MacIsaac’s goal came just 34 seconds after Matthew Schurr had given London a 2-1 lead, putting the Jr. Knights (0-2-2) in position to earn their first win of the tournament.</p> <p>But MacIsaac slipped into the slot in front of Craig Wood and snapped a shot past the London goaltender, giving the Titans (1-2-1) an important point in their quest to play in Saturday’s semifinals.</p> <p>—</p> <p>Privateers 2, Thrashers 2</p> <p>At St. John’s, the Thrashers and Privateers both stayed in the hunt for a spot in the semifinals by earning a single point in a tie.</p> <p>Regan Stire and Tyrenn Bauer had the goals for Winnipeg (1-1-2), which is tied with Quebec in the standings with four points. </p> <p>Danny Wicks and Marcus Power scored for the host squad (1-2-1), who are tied with Halifax with three points.</p>
