KELOWNA, B.C. – A fully involved garage fire was caused by an illegal marijuana grow-op Saturday morning in Kelowna, according to fire crews.
The Kelowna Fire Department was called to the blaze before 6 A.M. beside Osprey Park, in the 500 block of McKay Avenue.
The detached garage was engulfed in flames.
When crews arrived on the scene, a woman who lives in the home told them of the grow-op.
The illegal operation is said to belong to the woman’s son, according to Dale Calhoun, Platoon Captain.
Crews took a defensive approach to the fire after learning it was a grow-op and began to protect other structures from the flames.
While propane tanks were located inside the building, there were no explosions reported.
The second occupant of the home complained of chest pains and was attended to by BC Ambulance Service Paramedics. No other injuries were reported.
Because the fire was deemed to be caused by the illegal grow-op, there will be no fire investigation.
While RCMP interviewed the home owner, there is no word if charges will be pursued for the marijuana grow-op.
