TORONTO – Honest Ed’s is selling things from 50 cents and up.

While that may not be surprising to anyone who has been to Toronto’s legendary discount store, this time, it’s pieces of the store itself that are being sold.

Ahead of the store’s closing on Dec. 31, 2016, Honest Ed’s is auctioning off previously used advertisements and hand painted show cards seen so often above items in the store and hanging in the store windows.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The sale starts Monday at 11 a.m. and all proceeds will go to charity.

A press release from Honest Ed’s described the process of show card writing a “lost art.” Every item sold will have a “stamp of authenticity” and be signed by one of the “celebrity show card signwriters,” according to the press release.

The iconic building at the corner of Bathurst Street and Bloor Street West was sold to Westbank Properties – the developer of the Shangri-La hotels in Vancouver and Toronto – for an undisclosed amount in October.

The National Post reported in July, months prior to the sale, that David Mirvish was seeking approximately $100 million for the property.

Honest Ed’s is now renting the space back from Westbank until the store’s closing in 2016.
