Edmonton’s Canada Place to partially reopen Thursday after water main break

EDMONTON – The Canada Place Building in Edmonton will partially reopen Thursday morning, after being closed Wednesday because of a water main break.

The entire building will be open for business Thursday, with the exception of the Service Canada Centre on the main floor. That centre will remain closed to both tenants and the public until further notice, Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) said Thursday evening.

PWGSC says employees should consult with their managers on the status of their department.

The water main break happened at around 5 p.m. Tuesday after a pipe burst on the fourth floor, causing flooding and water damage.

“We responded with four units, 16 firefighters. When they got there there was about three inches of water on the fourth floor and several inches of water on the fifth floor walkway,” explained Doug MacDonald, Edmonton Fire Rescue Services.

Hundreds of people arrived at the Canada Place Building Wednesday morning, only to find the building was completely closed.

Amber Dorsett was one of those people. She drove two hours from Stettler in hopes of completing her passport application.

“I did not know about this. So, yeah, it was a long journey traveled.”

PWGSC worked with the property management company to repair the damage Wednesday.

Canada Place is a federal building that provides several services, including passport applications and renewals.

There are other Service Canada centres in Edmonton, including one in Meadowlark Shopping Centre and one in Millbourne Market Mall.
