CALGARY – Officers now say a man believed to have fallen in the Elbow River Monday afternoon may have pulled himself out of the water and left the area.

Shortly after 5:00p.m. Monday, emergency crews were called on reports that two men had entered the river near the Talisman Centre.

One of the men was spotted clinging to shore, but was swept away by the swollen river. He was rescued and taken to hospital in critical condition.

The aquatic team searched the area in three rescue boats for the second person but called off the search after three hours.

Officers now believe the second person may have got out of the water and left the area without speaking with emergency responders.

Police believe they know the identity of the individual and are now taking steps to trace him to ensure he is safe and well.

It’s not known how the two ended up in the water.
