New recycling program to create 570 jobs

Video: BC has taken another big step today towards being the first province to shift the burden of recycling from consumers and government to business. Jill Bennett reports.

An organization has been appointed to handle 185,000 tonnes of packaging and printed paper after it has been collected from B.C. homes and depots.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Multi-Material BC says Green By Nature EPR will manage the post-collection system for their residential packaging and printed paper recycling program.

As of May 19, 2014, 1.25 million B.C. households will be on the program.

Multi-Material BC says the post-collection system will employ 570 people in B.C. and bring $32 million in new investment for a container recycling facility in the Lower Mainland and a material recovery facility in Nanaimo.

The Multi-Material BC program is the first of its kind in Canada, where responsibility for managing the residential recycling of packaging and printed paper has been fully shifted by provincial regulation from local governments and taxpayers to businesses.
