George Doodnaught seeks bail pending appeal of sexual assault convictions

TORONTO – A day after being sentenced to 10 years in prison for the sexual assault of 21 women, George Doodnaught is hoping to be released on bail while he appeals his conviction.

Ontario Superior Court Justice David McCombs said during sentencing Tuesday that Doodnaught exploited the trust of the patients placed in his care and his conduct was “reprehensible in the extreme.”

“There are no reported Canadian cases in which an anaesthesiologist sexually assaulted sedated patients in an operating room during surgery,” McCombs said Tuesday.

McCombs suggested after Doodnaught’s November conviction that the anesthesiologist relief on his three decades of operating room experience to avoid detection.
