Where to watch the Olympic men’s hockey gold medal game in Edmonton

EDMONTON – Hockey fans across the province will be able to head to the pub to watch the Canadian men battle it out for Olympic gold early Sunday morning, after the province announced establishments will be able to open and begin serving alcohol at 5:00 a.m. if they so choose.

Premier Alison Redford tweeted Friday afternoon that bars and restaurants will be allowed to open — without applying for licences — for the gold medal game against Sweden.

“I won’t to be there, but I wish the people who are going to get up that early lots of love,” said Mayor Don Iveson. “But of course, we’re pulling for Canada.”

Bars and pubs won’t be allowed to stay open through the night, though. They will reopen just before game time Sunday. Most local businesses plan to open around 4:30 or 4:45 a.m.

But, the decision doesn’t come without warning. Police say they will be ramping up efforts Sunday, particularly between the time bars close and reopen.

“We’ll be having additional resources patrolling the various entertainment districts and the divisions in general, just to deal with the increased crowds,” said Inspector Chad Tawfik.

“I just encourage everybody to behave responsibly, regardless of the outcome,” added Iveson.

Most local businesses will work on a first-come, first-served basis.
