B.C. to allow pubs and bars to open early for Olympic hockey, but no booze allowed

The provincial government is throwing Olympic hockey fans a bone — sort of.

B.C. pubs and bars will be allowed to stay open, or open early for this weekend’s Olympic men’s bronze and gold medal hockey games.

On Saturday, bars will be allowed to open at 6 a.m. for the bronze medal game, which begins one hour later at 7 a.m.

On Sunday, pubs and bars can extend their hours for the gold medal game, which begins at 4 a.m.

But no liquor will be served until 9 a.m., and only at establishments where licenses permit it.

“In the interest of health and public safety, liquor service hours will remain unchanged,” said the Ministry of Justice in a statement.

The provincial government says that at pubs and bars that decide to stay open, unfinished liquor must be taken from customers within 30 minutes of when liquor hours end.

Establishments that want to participate have to e-mail the Liquor Control and Licensing Branch by Friday.
