The caves are a natural formation from centuries of water beating against the sandstone of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.

The frigid temperatures have made it possible for visitors to cross about a kilometre out onto the frozen part of Lake Superior, giving them rare access to the caves — the first time in five years.
