“Any individual enjoying recreational activities near a body of water must make a personal decision to do so, realizing that there is a degree of risk associated with this choice,” said police in a media release.

Police want the public to make sure proper thermal protection and floatation gear is worn while on the ice.

Parents are also advised to tell their children to stay away from lake shores, river banks and ponds during this midseason thaw.
