Thrifty Foods in Nanaimo’s Port Place mall is recalling cooked chicken products that may be contaminated with cleaning chemicals.

The grocery store, located at 650 South Terminal Ave., issued a warning about their cooked whole barbecue chickens, barbecue chicken breasts and legs sold between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Friday.

Thrifty Foods spokesperson Ralf Mundel said two pucks of commercial cleaning detergent were left in the chicken cookers when a batch was cooked.

“It was never in direct contact with the chicken, but we have rigorous standards in place and have voluntarily recalled the product,” Mundel said, adding that 19 units were sold during that time.

Thrifty Foods said no illnesses have been reported.
