TORONTO – Toronto Maple Leafs forward Joffrey Lupul has been fined $10,000 for cross checking a player in the neck during Wednesday’s Winter Classic, but has avoided a suspension.
The cross check came about nine minutes into the first period as Lupul and Detroit Red Wings forward Patrick Eaves battled for the puck along the sideboards.
Lupul was assessed a two-minute minor penalty for cross-checking as a result.
$10,000 is the maximum a player can be fined under the current Collective Bargaining Agreement. The money goes towards the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
The Winter Classic was played at Michigan Stadium – otherwise known as “The Big House” – in Ann Arbor, Michigan on New Year’s Day. More than 100,000 fans were in attendance.
The Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 in a shootout.
