Joffrey Lupul fined $10k, avoids suspension after Winter Classic cross check

TORONTO – Toronto Maple Leafs forward Joffrey Lupul has been fined $10,000 for cross checking a player in the neck during Wednesday’s Winter Classic, but has avoided a suspension.

The cross check came about nine minutes into the first period as Lupul and Detroit Red Wings forward Patrick Eaves battled for the puck along the sideboards.

Lupul was assessed a two-minute minor penalty for cross-checking as a result.

$10,000 is the maximum a player can be fined under the current Collective Bargaining Agreement. The money goes towards the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

The Winter Classic was played at Michigan Stadium – otherwise known as “The Big House” – in Ann Arbor, Michigan on New Year’s Day. More than 100,000 fans were in attendance.
