Police are searching for two people missing after falling through the ice on Charleston Lake, south of Ottawa.
Officers were called to the lake, roughly 95 km south of Ottawa, after Leeds County OPP say three people broke through the ice while fishing shortly before 5 p.m. Sunday.
In an update Monday, police said one of the people was able to self-extricate themselves from the freezing waters and has been safely located.
Police say a search and rescue operation is now underway for the two remaining missing people just north of Lansdowne.
The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Trenton is helping with the search, along with crews from the Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes fire departments, police say.
In a video posted on X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter, OPP Const. Joey Mason said Charleston Lake Provincial Park will be closed “for the foreseeable future” while the missing persons investigation continues.
“Our thoughts are with the two families of the two individuals who are missing,” Mason said in the video.
“This is a reminder to stay off the ice, as no ice is safe ice.”
