The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure says there is no danger to motorists of ice bombs falling from the Alex Fraser Bridge and damaging the cars below.

Last year more than 300 vehicles were damaged on the Port Mann Bridge when chunks of ice fell from the cables. On Tuesday motorists reported seeing some chunks fall from the Alex Fraser Bridge, but the ministry says the bridge is safe to travel on.

“The maintenance contractor visited the bridge this morning and have reported no signs of falling ice,” a spokesperson tells Global News in an email.

Crews sprayed de-icer on the cross-beam two days ago and that lasts for about four days. Crews will continue to monitor the bridge.

“Should motorists see anything of concern, we encourage them to call our  maintenance contractor (Mainroad – Lower Mainland) at 604-271-0337,” says the spokesperson. Remember to wait until you can safely pull over if you making a call, or use a hands-free device.

As temperatures rise, motorists can expect to see small bits of snow and slush shedding off the bridge cables onto the non-travelling portion of the bridge. The ministry says this is normal for this time of year.
