Edmonton police investigating crash between car and power pole downtown

It was a chaotic morning for police in Edmonton Friday, responding to multiple serious incidents along 107 Ave. As Jasmine King explains, one man is dead, another injured within just a couple of hours – Dec 22, 2023

Officers with the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) were called to investigate a serious collision near 109th Street and 107th Avenue on Friday morning.

According to police, a vehicle was going very fast when officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The vehicle sped off, police said, and collided with a power pole between 110 and 111 streets at 107 Avenue.

EPS said a man in his 20s was taken to hospital with minor injuries and is now facing charges.

Manisha Chugh owns Little Golden Daycare in a strip mall next to where the crash happened.

“It was scary to see what happened,” Chugh said. “I just thought thank God my kids are safe. It happened when the daycare was closed, no glass was broken, no damage to the building.

“The kids were not there to see and hear– that would have been traumatizing for them.”

A large tree planted along the sidewalk next to the street was destroyed in the crash and Chugh believes it saved her business.

“I totally believe that the tree saved us,” she added. “The tree took all the pressure. It’s destroyed (but) it saved the daycare.”

Police allowed her staff to enter the business around 7 a.m.

Police said the area had been cleared and the roadway was reopened by noon on Friday.
