Gallery: World mourns death of Nelson Mandela

Tributes and messages of sympathy are pouring in from around the world after Nelson Mandela, a freedom fighter and former president of South Africa, died Thursday.

Mandela emerged from 27 years in prison to negotiate a peaceful end to white minority rule in his country.

South African President Jacob Zuma announced Mandela’s death, saying — quote — “we’ve lost our greatest son.”
