The Grand River Transit Universal bus pass is expected to be available for Conestoga College students next fall.

The region says that a vote was held with over 9,000 students taking part earlier this month, and 93 per cent of those approving the measure.

“Transit is a critical tool for making our region more affordable, sustainable and liveable,” regional Chail Karen Redman stated.

“With this vote, Conestoga College students have chosen to support an easy-to-use and unlimited transportation option to get around the community.”

A spokesperson for the region told Global News in an email that students will pay $118.97 per term for unlimited access to GRT buses and ION LRT trains.

Those fees will be mandatory, but they are expected to save students $680 a year.

Similar programs were implemented at Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Waterloo over the past few years.

The move still needs to ratified by Waterloo Region Council as part of the 2024 budget.
