OPP say it took several hours to investigate the crash, which happened on the 401 Eastbound near Lakeridge Road around 9 a.m. Officers say it appears to have been caused after a passenger vehicle slowed down in a live lane and was struck by a transport truck.

“The transport truck collided into the back of the passenger vehicle,” OPP Const. Sami Nasr said.
“After that initial impact the back end of the trailer tipped over the centre median, causing major damage to the light standard.”

The driver, a 25-year-old woman, was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition, where she succumbed to her injuries.

Police say the crash caused significant damage to the barrier and light standard.

Investigators say the transport truck was carrying cardboard and sent its cargo flying all over the highway.

“It was carrying cardboard boxes and it lost its load across the highway there on both sides,”  Nasr said.

“There definitely was secondary collisions because of that initial collision.”

OPP say no one else was injured, but there was a massive cleanup afterwards, causing major headaches for commuters.

The roadway was closed for several hours as the Ministry of Transportation ensured there weren’t any safety concerns surrounding the area impacted by the crash.
